The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal expresses its deep sorrow at the accident that took place in Lisbon yesterday afternoon, 3 September, involving the iconic and celebrated Elevador da Glória funicular.
We offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of all those who lost their lives in this tragic accident — many of them Portuguese, and others of many different nationalities and origins, who were in our country for leisure or for work.
We also stand actively in solidarity with the injured and with all those now suffering the consequences of this unheard-of tragedy, urging Masons — that immense fraternal family — in all their various circumstances and professional activities, to make themselves available to those most in need of help and support in this difficult hour, whether material, psychological or spiritual.
We further ask the Brethren of all the Worshipful Lodges that make up the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal, and in particular their Worshipful Masters, to hold the victims of this tragic Lisbon accident in their Chains of Union, sending them our good energies, in egregore and in love, with wishes for a swift and full recovery.
And may those who have sadly departed rest in Peace.
Lisbon, 4 September 2025
The Grand Master,
Fernando José Pereira
