Message from the Grand Master
Last week Portugal celebrated 45 years of freedom and democracy.
After so many more years, in which our country was plunged into a dark and authoritarian regime, where many Portuguese were deprived of the most elementary freedoms or rights and where thousands of democrats, many of them Freemasons, were persecuted and imprisoned by the regime’s police forces, on 25 April 1974 the day came when the gates of freedom opened to a new Portugal that was to come.
It is this free Portugal that we celebrate these days and that continues to need so much and more and more of us.
After 45 years, our democracy is still far from perfect. There are serious and worrying signs that leave us bitter and impose on the Portuguese, especially the true Masons, a hard and exhausting work in the gross stone of corruption and incompetence, fighting in a committed way in the construction of a more fraternal, fairer, honest and competent Portugal.
The workers of the Grand Sovereign Lodge of Portugal are conscious and united in this plan, in a fruitful and collective effort for Portugal and humanity.
Today and always, inspired by great human and spiritual values, in the name of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
Long live Portugal. Long live April 25th!
João Pestana Dias
Grand Master of the Grand Sovereign Lodge of Portugal
