Grand Master’s Declaration on the World Climate Emergency

The latest assessment of climate change by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirms the enormous human irresponsibility in global warming and the phenomena associated with it, the scientific evidence is unfortunately irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions resulting mainly from the use of fossil fuels and the massive felling of forests are stifling our planet and putting humanity at immediate risk. Global warming is affecting every region of the planet, with many of the changes becoming irreversible.

The planet is undergoing widespread warming at an unprecedented rate.
The only way to avoid crossing this limit is to step up our efforts globally and urgently and follow the most ambitious path. Extreme weather disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity.
This year’s United Nations climate conference in Glasgow is thus of superlative importance for the serious and global commitment to the salvation of life on the planet as we know it today.

As the United Nations Secretary-General said yesterday, “This report should sound like a death sentence for coal and fossil fuels before they destroy our planet.”

In this sense, SOVEREIGN, being the new Portuguese Freemasonry for the 21st Century, and whose members cultivate not only humanism, the principles of freedom, democracy, equality, fraternity and intellectual improvement, but also an attitude of openness to innovation and society, is at the forefront in defending environmental sustainability and all actions aimed at structured and assertively saving humanity, for that is what we speak of, SAVE HUMANITY!

We are the only Masonic obedience, which since its origin is truly committed to this purpose, which is why we have since had a “Great Officer for Citizenship and Sustainability” responsible for leading several initiatives in the same direction as the United Nations Declaration. There is no time for delays and no room for excuses, this is the biggest challenge of our lives.

As Grand Master of the Grand Sovereign Lodge of Portugal, I reiterate our full commitment to actively and committedly collaborate in the reversal of this catastrophic foresight for humanity in the face of the severity of this phenomenon.
We are not and are not indifferent to the greatest challenge that humanity faces, under penalty of irreversibly mortuing our future, that of our children and that of our grandchildren.
